Galaxy Cores as Relics of Black Hole Mergers
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the hypothesis that the cores of elliptical galaxies and bulges are created from the binding energy liberated by the coalescence of supermassive binary black holes during galaxy mergers. Assuming that the central density profiles of galaxies were initially steep power laws, ρ ∼ r, we define the “mass deficit” as the mass in stars that had to be removed from the nucleus in order to produce the observed core. We use nonparametric deprojection to compute the mass deficit in a sample of 35 early-type galaxies with high-resolution imaging data. We find that the mass deficit correlates well with the mass of the nuclear black hole, consistent with the predictions of merger models. We argue that cores in halos of non-interacting dark matter particles should be comparable in size to those observed in the stars.

Nuclear Cusps and Cores in Early-type Galaxies as Relics of Binary Black Hole Mergers
We present an analysis of the central cusp slopes and core parameters of early-type galaxies using a large database of surface brightness profiles obtained from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We examine the relation between the central cusp slopes, core parameters, and black hole masses in early-type galaxies, in light of two models that attempt to explain the formation of cores and densi...
متن کاملOn the Formation of an Eccentric Disk via Disruption of a Bulge Core near a Massive Black Hole
We consider the possibility that an infalling bulge core or stellar cluster could form an eccentric disk, following tidal disruption by a massive black hole in the center of a galaxy. As a function of central black hole mass, we constrain the core radii and central densities of cluster progenitors capable of becoming nearly Keplerian disks which can support lopsided slow modes. We find that pro...
متن کاملCorrelations between Supermassive Black Holes, Velocity Dispersions, and Mass Deficits in Elliptical Galaxies with Cores1
High-dynamic-range surface photometry in a companion paper makes possible accurate measurement of the stellar light deficits Ldef and mass deficits Mdef associated with the cores of elliptical galaxies. We show that Ldef correlates with the velocity dispersion σ of the host galaxy bulge averaged outside the central region that may be affected by a supermassive black hole (BH). We confirm that L...
متن کاملOn the Origin of Isophotal Shapes in Elliptical Galaxies
Using semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, the origin of boxy and disky elliptical galaxies is investigated. We find that the simple scenario, motivated by N-body simulations, in which the isophotal shape is only dependent on the mass ratio of the last major merger, is not able to reproduce the observation that the fraction of boxy and disky ellipticals depends on galaxy luminosity. The ...
متن کاملA unified model for AGN feedback in cosmological simulations of structure formation
We discuss a numerical model for black hole growth and its associated feedback processes that for the first time allows cosmological simulations of structure formation to simultaneously follow the build up of the cosmic population of galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Our model assumes that seed black holes are present at early cosmic epochs at the centres of forming halos. We then track thei...
